The Historic Downtown Streetscape project is a continuing, multi-phase transportation enhancement project that began in the late 1990’s with the improvement of the 4-block stretch of Market Street.  Since that time, subsequent phases focused on the enhancement of Wabash and Miami Streets, with future plans to improve Canal Street as well.  This ongoing project was started as an effort to restore the economic vitality of the core downtown area and to improve the quality of life for the citizens of this community.

Enhancements are geared toward improving connectivity and pedestrian access in the downtown commercial district.  Improvements include the demolition of existing deteriorated sidewalks and curbing, widening of walkways to accommodate multiple users, putting in handicap accessibility structures, construction of walks where none now exist, installation of new historical light fixtures and ornamental poles, bricks, street tree planting, planters and enhanced crosswalks, and updating utilities.

Upon the completion of this project, the many downtown businesses and organizations that have supported the revitalization of Historic Downtown Wabash will have renewed pride as a result of the efforts that have been taken to restore historic preservation and appreciation.
